Starting a Portrait Commission
To start your portrait, we schedule a meeting to discuss your ideas: clothing, background, or concerns you may have. If you have not yet made these decisions, don't worry--part of my job is to advise you! I can offer suggestions based on twenty years of experience painting portraits of children and adults.
This first meeting can be combined with the first photo sitting. With children especially, I strive to keep the session brief and enjoyable. I take these photographs myself; I think it is an important step in establishing a relationship between the sitter and artist. I also like to see favorite photographs you may have, and am happy to include heirlooms or pets at no additional fee. These things or perhaps a special place add layers of meaning to the portrait and make it unique.
After taking a series of photographs, I spend time making a detailed drawing of the subject's face to show the expression and likeness you will see in the finished portrait. Then I make an oil color sketch of the composition. Here I pay special attention to body language--because a good likeness is not only about the face. Think of how you can recognize your child or a friend from a distance--a certain turn of the head or a characteristic gesture can make a big difference. Only after these are approved does work begin on the full-size canvas. Any adjustments are easiest to make at this point. This is an important step that goes a long way to ensure only happy surprises.
I use the finest linen and professional oil paints to be sure that your portrait will last for many generations. Framing is not included in the fee, but I am happy to advise you on framing choices or, at an additional charge, to provide a suitable frame with the delivery of the finished portrait.
Portraits normally require three to six months to complete. A deposit of 30% is requested at the beginning, with the balance due on satisfactory delivery of the finished portrait. For your convenience I now offer credit card service through PayPal.
Fees do not include shipping, crating, or travel expense and are guaranteed through December 2010. To receive a schedule of fees or make an appointment, please call the studio (251.545.1441) or use the Contact page to send a message.
