Gulf Coast landscape paintings in oils : Swaying marsh grasses, views from a car window, a lone figure in a boat, all under ever-changing skies: these are the things Susan Downing-White paints about.
Rich transparent glazes laid over scumbles of thicker paint create an illusion of depth and space.
The method is old and careful and allows her to catch the mood of a landscape like a butterfly under glass.
Influenced by 17th century Dutch landscape paintings, Susan Downing-White’s oil paintings depict landscape as metaphor, often using visual collage and incorporating custom made frames into intimately-sized pieces.
